She explained that the tour has been a valuable test of the team’s resilience, adding that they took specific steps during the transition from Jamaica to Britain to manage jet lag, such as keeping players awake at certain times. While acknowledging the difficulties, she emphasised that overcoming such challenges is crucial for competing at the highest level.
The Nations Cup isn’t just another tournament—it’s a crucial stepping stone in the Proteas’ preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Van Dyk stressed the importance of adapting to different styles of play, noting that African teams and England each bring unique approaches. She highlighted the need for the Proteas to be prepared for all styles they might encounter.
Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane is eager for the challenge. She pointed out that this tournament is the team’s first big test since the 2023 World Cup. Comparing their recent experience in Jamaica, she recalled how the loud atmosphere made it difficult to hear instructions from the coaches. In England, with bigger arenas and a less intense crowd, she believes the team will have a different challenge but remains confident in their ability to fight until the end.
Debutant goalkeeper Syntiche Kabuya is set to make her first appearance for South Africa. Describing her call-up as an overwhelming but proud moment, she shared that she has worked hard to earn her place in the squad. While excited, she admitted feeling nervous about competing against top-ranked teams, especially given the high expectations placed on the Proteas.
The Proteas kick off their campaign against Uganda in Nottingham at 5pm (SA time) on Saturday, followed by England vs Malawi. On Sunday, Uganda faces Malawi, while South Africa takes on hosts England at 6pm. The final matches will be played in London on February 8 and 9 as the Proteas look to make their mark on the international stage.
