(The Post News)– Canada and Mexico vow to implement tariffs on American goods as a response to the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on businesses and consumers in both countries.
The executive order signed by President Trump implemented a 25% tariff on Mexican and most Canadian goods while imposing a 10% tariff on Canadian energy products and Chinese goods. President Trump frankly commented on the newly imposed tariffs by saying Americans could feel “some pain” after the tariffs take place.
Canada and Mexico retaliated with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum threatening to implement retaliatory measures that included tariffs. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are set to begin the same day the United States tariffs on Canadian imports are scheduled to take effect. Canada initially ordered tariffs of 25% on American imports, including beverages, cosmetics, and paper products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars. A second list of commodities was set to be issued soon, which included passenger automobiles, trucks, steel and aluminium products, some fruits and vegetables, meat, pigs, dairy products, aerospace equipment, and more. The products were believed to be worth 125 billion Canadian dollars.
Mexican President Sheinbaum, on the other hand, said she will announce the details of what she calls “Plan B” as soon as possible. Moreover, the Chinese Commerce Ministry responded to the newly imposed tariffs by announcing that China would file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organisation “and take necessary countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests.”
Meanwhile, Trump said, “We can play the game all they want.” He also elaborated that he plans to speak with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts on Monday about the arising new trade war.
