Philip Henning was the standout performer, securing two singles wins and teaming up with Alec Beckley for a crucial doubles victory. Their efforts ensured South Africa stayed in Group II, despite a shaky start. Day one saw an unexpected upset when Nigeria’s Christopher Bulus (ranked 1018 in the world) shocked South Africa’s Kris van Wyk (ranked 358) with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) win, levelling the tie at 1-1. But Henning stepped up on day two, delivering when it mattered most.
This was also the first Davis Cup tie under new captain Pietie Norval, who recently took over from Christo van Rensburg. Norval, an Olympic silver medallist in doubles, now has his first win as national captain. Despite minimal promotion, local tennis fans were eager to see the team in action. With this victory, South Africa remains in Group II and will find out their next opponent and venue in September.
