(The Post News)– The Polokwane municipality has assured football fans that Peter Mokaba Stadium will be ready to host Bafana Bafana’s crucial 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on March 21.
The stadium’s surface was severely damaged during a December music concert, leaving Limpopo-based PSL teams Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United without access in recent weeks. However, the provincial government is confident the pitch will be match-ready for Bafana’s return.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba emphasised the significance of the fixture, calling it a “momentous occasion” for the city, province, and country as the team pushes for a spot at football’s biggest stage. SAFA president Danny Jordaan echoed this, highlighting the importance of taking Bafana games to different regions, following packed crowds in Mangaung, Gqeberha, and Cape Town during AFCON qualifiers last year.
Bafana Bafana are currently joint leaders of Group C with Rwanda and Benin, sitting on seven points from four matches. Nigeria, a group favourite, has struggled and sits in fifth place with just three points. A strong performance against Lesotho will not only boost Bafana’s qualification hopes but also improve their goal difference before they travel to Benin for another key clash days later. With their 2024 AFCON bronze medal still fresh, Hugo Broos’ men will be looking to keep momentum going. Now, all eyes are on Polokwane to ensure the stadium is ready for action.
