(The Post News)– A tour of growth, leadership, and hard-fought battles: The Spar Proteas received a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport after an intense month-long tour of Jamaica and England. The team showcased remarkable resilience and growth during their campaign at the Vitality Nations Cup, narrowly losing to hosts England 61-55 in the final at London’s Copper Box Arena.
At a media briefing on Tuesday, head coach Jenny Van Dyk expressed pride in her squad’s progress, emphasising the invaluable lessons learned on and off the court. “The team has been fantastic. We’ve spent so much time together, and you can see what we can achieve as a unit,” she said. “We’re very clear on what we want to achieve in the next couple of months and years.”
Goal Attack Kamogelo Maseko, who shone throughout the tour, reflected on the experience, calling it a turning point for the team. “We were clear that if we want to be the best in the world, we have to play against the best. It was hours of analysis and hard work, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything,” Maseko shared.
The Proteas’ resolve was put to the test in the final when they played six minutes with one player down after centre Refiloe Nketsa was sent off for dangerous play. Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane became emotional witnessing captain Khanyisa Chawane’s leadership during the tense moment. Molokwane expressed that Khanyisa Chawane’s leadership made her feel proud and emotional, while also stating that in Chawane, they now have a leader and a replacement for Bongiwe Msomi.
As the team looks ahead to future challenges, Molokwane also expressed gratitude to the sponsors who have stood by them throughout their journey. The Spar Proteas may not have lifted the trophy, but they’ve certainly won the hearts of fans and laid a solid foundation for future success.
