(The Post News)– In a shocking turn of events, Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania Chidimma Adetshina, was detained by the Department of Home Affairs in Cape Town on Saturday. Rungo, who holds a Mozambican passport, was found to be living in the country with her underage child, despite being stripped of her South African citizenship last year.
The arrest comes after an investigation revealed that Rungo had allegedly committed identity fraud to obtain South African citizenship. Her daughter, Adetshina, was also implicated in the scandal and had her citizenship revoked. Adetshina, who was born in South Africa, has since moved to her father’s home country, Nigeria, where she went on to win the country’s beauty pageant and eventually became the first runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant.
According to Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza, Rungo’s actions show a “brazen disregard” for the law, and she will be handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation. The Hawks, a specialised law enforcement unit, are also investigating Rungo for potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct.
