(The Post News)- Russia has intensified its assault on Ukrainian troops in the eastern region, with Kyiv’s military reporting a significant surge in combat engagements. Over a 24-hour period on Saturday, Ukraine reported 261 combat engagements with Russia, the largest number recorded this year and more than double the previous daily average.
The situation is particularly dire near the Pokrovsk logistics hub, where Russian forces have seized control of Berezivka village and are advancing southwest, threatening key supply routes and outposts. Despite this, Ukraine’s President Zelensky reported a “good result” as Kyiv’s forces recaptured Pishchane village, 5km south of Pokrovsk.
Ukraine has been utilizing drones to launch deep strikes on Russia, aiming to weaken its position. Meanwhile, Russia continues to conduct regular drone and missile strikes while advancing on the ground in the east. An anonymous NATO official expects a much stronger push from Russian forces, with a significant increase in efforts to advance.
The escalation comes amid upcoming US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia and Trump’s peace initiative, which has raised concerns in Kyiv and European capitals over security. With Ukraine excluded from the Saudi Arabia talks, it is now seeking a joint strategy with US and European allies before meeting with Russia.
