(The Post News)- ASAP Rocky, the Grammy-nominated rapper, has been found not guilty of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The verdict was met with cheers and celebration from fans on social media, who could not stop joking and creating memes about the outcome.
The case stemmed from a 2021 incident in which ASAP Rocky allegedly fired a gun at his former friend and fellow rapper, A$AP Relli, during a dispute on a Hollywood street. Prosecutors alleged that Rocky fired twice at Relli, grazing his knuckles with one of the shots. However, the defence argued that Rocky fired blanks from a prop gun that he picked up from a music video set.
After three weeks of testimony, the jury delivered a verdict of not guilty on both counts. ASAP Rocky was overcome with emotion as he hugged his defence attorneys and Rihanna, who was seated in the audience. The verdict was met with a collective roar from the gallery, and fans on social media quickly began celebrating with memes and jokes.
ASAP Rocky’s defence team, led by attorney Joe Tacopina, argued that the prosecution’s key witness, A$AP Relli, was not credible. Tacopina also brought in two of Rocky’s inner circles to testify that he had fired blanks from a prop gun.
The defence strategy worked, as the jury delivered a verdict of not guilty. The verdict is a huge relief for ASAP Rocky, who was facing up to 24 years in prison if convicted. The rapper had turned down a prosecution offer of six months in jail and probation if he pleaded guilty to one count. Instead, he chose to take his chances with a jury trial.
With the verdict behind him, ASAP Rocky can now focus on his music and upcoming projects. He is set to headline the Rolling Loud music festival in March and will be one of the celebrity co-chairs of the Met Gala in May. He also stars in the upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest,” directed by Spike Lee.
ASAP Rocky’s fans are thrilled with the verdict, and the rapper’s team is breathing a sigh of relief. As Tacopina said, “He’s loved very well, loved in the city… he’s got a lot of fans, and that doesn’t happen because he’s a singer. It happens because of who he is as a person.”
