(The Post News)– After an impressive run at the 2024 Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, South African speedster Isivunguvungu is back in action this weekend. The Graham Motion-trained sprinter is set to contest the $125,000 Listed Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, Florida, on Saturday, with the race scheduled for 00:58 SA time on Sunday.
The 1000m turf sprint, which is run around a turn, sees Isivunguvungu drawn 11 out of 14. Motion believes the draw isn’t necessarily a disadvantage but admits the gelding might need the run after a 15-week break. “He could be one work short, but he’s done enough to come on from this,” the trainer said.
A Rising Star in the U.S.
Since making the long journey from South Africa and completing quarantine, Isivunguvungu has already made an impact on U.S. soil. He won his American debut in the $150,000 Da Hoss Stakes (1100 m) at Colonial Downs last September, proving he can compete internationally.
This weekend, he will be ridden by Samuel Marin, a rising talent in the U.S. racing scene. The Venezuelan jockey, who arrived in the States in 2021 without speaking English or having ridden on turf, has since established himself, topping the standings at the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet in late 2024.
Eyes on Dubai Glory
While the Turf Dash Stakes is the immediate focus, Motion is preparing Isivunguvungu for the $1.5 million Gr1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200m, turf) at the Dubai World Cup on 5 April. The Narrow Creek-bred son of Equus Champion What A Winter is the only South African-bred horse among 172 entries from 120 countries for the prestigious event.
The Al Quoz Sprint has attracted a stellar field, including defending champion California Spangle and Hong Kong’s Howdeepisyourlove and Invincible Sage. A strong showing this weekend will set Isivunguvungu up perfectly for his Dubai mission.
