(The Post News)- Footgolf South Africa (FGSA) launched its 2025 season on February 1 with the highly anticipated Punters Paradise event at the picturesque Hillside Golf Course in Pretoria North. More than 60 players teed off in the season opener, setting an exciting tone for what promises to be a defining year for the sport in the country.
Footgolf, a dynamic hybrid of football and golf, is played on a golf course where participants kick a standard football into oversized holes in as few shots as possible. The sport is rapidly gaining traction worldwide, and South Africa is no exception.
The atmosphere at Hillside Golf Course was electric, with players of all levels showcasing their skill and dedication. FGSA, headquartered in Midrand, noted a remarkable improvement in performance across all categories, attributing it to players’ increasing commitment to training and a shift in competitive mindset.
The competition was fierce as players vied for top honours. In the Men’s Senior Division, Scott Keevy claimed first place, followed by Clint White in second and Doctor Makhanya in third. The Men’s Division saw Pitsi Molebatsi secure victory, with Damian Rodgers and Tshepo Kekana finishing second and third, respectively. In the Women’s Division, Mpho Makua emerged as the champion, while Kefilwe Mphake and Boitumelo Maleke rounded out the podium.
FGSA’s continued efforts to grow footgolf in South Africa have not gone unnoticed. The organisation is actively seeking partnerships to expand the sport across all levels, from juniors to seniors, in both men’s and women’s divisions.
The call to action extends to corporations willing to invest in the rehabilitation of golf courses, equipment partnerships, and branding and marketing initiatives to drive participation from all sectors of society.
FGSA CEO Eric Mlambo expressed optimism about the future, noting that this moment presents a significant opportunity to boost South African participation at the upcoming World Cup and to solidify footgolf’s presence across the continent.
Mlambo also emphasised the importance of increasing awareness and securing resources to support young players and broader development initiatives. He pointed out that FGSA’s public benefit certification provides meaningful incentives for businesses looking to contribute to their cause.
