(The Post News)– The South African Proteas kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy campaign in style with a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in Karachi. Opener Ryan Rickelton stole the show, scoring a maiden ODI century (103 off 106 balls) to help the Proteas post 315-6 after winning the toss. Captain Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52 not out) also chipped in with vital contributions.
The South African pace attack made full use of the conditions, dismantling Afghanistan for 208 in 43.3 overs. Kagiso Rabada led the charge with 3-36, while Lungi Ngidi (2-56), Wiaan Mulder (2-36), and Marco Jansen (1-32) ensured Afghanistan never settled. Rahmat Shah fought back with a valiant 90, but it wasn’t enough to rescue his side.
Victory ended South Africa’s six-match losing streak in ODIs and put them in a strong position in Group B. Bavuma praised his side’s clinical performance, while Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted his team struggled with the bat.
South Africa’s next challenge comes against Australia in Rawalpindi on 25 February, while Afghanistan faces England the following day. With a confidence-boosting win under their belt, the Proteas will be looking to build momentum as they chase their first-ever ICC Champions Trophy title.
