(The Post News)– Mercedes has officially introduced their latest Formula 1 challenger, the W16, in a digital launch on Monday. With pre-season testing on the horizon, the team is looking ahead to a new chapter following the departure of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli, 18, steps into Hamilton’s seat, joining British driver George Russell. Experienced reserve and former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas also returns to the team in a supporting role.
Team principal Toto Wolff expressed his enthusiasm for the transition, emphasising that 2025 marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for Mercedes-AMG motorsport. He acknowledged the team’s strong foundation but highlighted the uncertainty of their standing until the first race in Australia.
Russell, now the team’s senior driver as he enters his seventh season, is expected to play a key role in guiding Mercedes forward. Wolff noted that Antonelli, being a rookie, will inevitably experience highs and lows throughout the season.
Once the dominant force in Formula 1 with eight consecutive constructors’ titles from 2014 to 2021, Mercedes struggled last year, finishing fourth in the standings. Technical director James Allison explained that while regulatory stability has made performance gains more challenging, the team has focused on refining key weaknesses from the previous season.
He pointed out that their primary efforts were directed at resolving the W15’s sluggish response in slow corners and addressing tire temperature inconsistencies that made the car unpredictable. Encouraged by their progress over the winter, Allison is eager to see how they compare to their rivals when the season begins.
Looking ahead, he anticipates a competitive season with multiple race winners, possibly exceeding the four teams and seven drivers who claimed victories last year.
The 2025 Formula 1 season kicks off in Australia on March 16, with Mercedes-powered McLaren aiming to retain their constructors’ crown and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen vying for a fifth consecutive drivers’ title.
