(The Post News)– Kesha Louw solidified her status as South Africa’s top amateur golfer with a dramatic playoff victory at the South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship. The 18-year-old triumphed in challenging weather at PE Golf Club—The Hill in Gqeberha on Tuesday, while Mogomotsi Sebata secured the B-Division title.
Louw kept her composure as strong winds and rain disrupted play after nine holes. Lisa Coetzer, who led the first two rounds, struggled on the back nine, seeing her seven-shot advantage disappear after costly errors. Louw capitalised, making crucial birdies to force a playoff.
Both players found the rough off the tee in the playoff, but Louw’s steady approach secured the win after Coetzer misjudged a tricky downhill putt. “This victory means everything,” Louw shared, reflecting on her journey to the title.
In the B-Division, Sebata lifted the Abe Bailey Trophy with a four-stroke victory. The second-year B.Sc. student approached this year’s event with a winning mindset. “Before, I played for experience, but this time I came to win,” she said.
With stroke play concluded, the top 64 players now battle in the South African Amateur Championship’s match play format. Louw faces Lucia Mhlabane in the Championship Division, while Sebata meets Odette Booysen in the Flight Division. “Match play allows me to be more aggressive,” Louw noted. With her recent victory, she’s well-positioned for another strong performance.
