Jones, a key figure in South Africa’s back-to-back World Cup triumphs, will rejoin the setup on 1 March 2025. After leaving the Boks post-2023, he took up a short-lived role with England under Steve Borthwick but struggled to integrate before being released in December 2024.
Previously, Jones was based in Europe, monitoring overseas Springboks and analysing opposition teams—contributions that played a pivotal role in the Boks’ World Cup success. His return reunites him with Jerry Flannery, with whom he worked at Munster under Erasmus in 2016-17.
Jones will join an already strong coaching team, with Tony Brown continuing as attack coach. His recent experience with England and Six Nations teams will provide valuable insights as the Boks prepare to defend their title. There were rumours Jones might join Ireland or Munster, but SA Rugby’s announcement came unexpectedly. Erasmus called him vital to the team’s future, citing his experience and professionalism.
Further additions to the Bok staff include Lance Lemmetjies as physiotherapist from June and Robyn Moore as team dietitian from April. Both have previous experience with the team and will be crucial in supporting player welfare and performance. The Springbok coaches begin planning on 7 March, followed by a Cape Town alignment camp on 10 March.
