Van der Dussen, who turned 36 this month, has represented South Africa across all formats but now focuses solely on ODIs. Acknowledging that younger batters are emerging, he recognises that his time in the team is not indefinite.
Speaking from Karachi ahead of South Africa’s final group-stage match against England, he admitted that his future in international cricket is uncertain. He is aware that a new generation of batters, including Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, and Ryan Rickelton, are pushing for spots. With strong performances in domestic and international cricket, these players present serious competition for a place in the top order.
Since 2019, van der Dussen has been South Africa’s most consistent No. 3, boasting the third-highest batting average in ODIs. However, his recent form has dipped, with just one half-century in his last ten innings before his 52 against Afghanistan. With Heinrich Klaasen set to return from injury, he could find himself competing for a place if Bavuma, de Zorzi, and Rickelton are retained.
Despite uncertainty over his long-term role, van der Dussen remains committed to the Proteas. He has rejected opportunities to play county cricket, preferring to focus on his ODI game. While some players have prioritised T20 leagues, he maintains that playing for South Africa remains his primary goal. As South Africa prepares to face England, van der Dussen remains determined to contribute. Whether or not he makes it to 2027, he is committed to helping shape the team’s future.
