(The Post News)- At a packed Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a fiercely contested match, increasing their lead to 18 points. Lucas Ribeiro Costa, a strong candidate for PSL Footballer of the Year, scored a fantastic goal in the first half with a volley that sailed past Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and into the roof of the net.
The victory gives Sundowns 54 points from 20 games. With five more games played than the Orlando Pirates, who are currently in second position, Sundowns’ lead seems insurmountable. Even if the Pirates win their remaining four games, including their match against the Marumo Gallants at Toyota Stadium later on Saturday, Sundowns’ lead would still be significant.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi made a bold move by starting the seasoned Edmilson Dove at left-back and awarding him the captain’s armband. Dove was playing his first game of the season after recovering from an injury. Nabi’s strategy aimed to neutralize Sundowns’ potent attack and strengthen his team’s defense.
The Chiefs started strongly and created early opportunities. However, Mdu Shabalala failed to capitalize on a good attack, wasting a great chance. Missed opportunities can be costly against a clinical team like Sundowns.
Sundowns punished Chiefs shortly after. Ribeiro Costa scored the winning goal in the 41st minute after a quick counterattack that caught Chiefs off guard. Costa’s 12th league goal extended his lead in the scoring rankings. He showed great control in shooting the ball past Bvuma.
Glody Lilepo of Chiefs responded by outpacing Lucas Suarez on the right wing with his speed, but his cross was not received by a teammate. The one goal separated the teams at halftime.
In the second half, Chiefs seemed to close down space by matching Sundowns. The game turned into a tactical battle. However, Sundowns suffered a blow when Khuliso Mudau was substituted after recovering from an injury. Coach Miguel Cardoso chose to err on the side of caution.
Bvuma blocked Rayners’ cross, giving Sundowns a chance to extend their lead. Bvuma’s legs then stopped Teboho Mokoena’s subsequent attempt. Rayners’ shot missed the mark, but Costa and Rayners worked effectively together.
Ashley du Preez received a lofted pass from Chiefs’ Mfundo Vilakazi, but his reaching header was inaccurate. Sundowns managed to hold on for the win, moving closer to their ninth consecutive league championship. Coach Cardoso and his team celebrated another crucial victory.
