(The Post News)- Real Madrid failed to defend their title against Real Betis. On Saturday, Los Blancos dropped points, allowing Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to share the top spot, after Betis came from behind to win 2-1 at the Benito Villamarin Stadium.
Brahim Diaz gave the visitors the lead, but Johnny Cardoso’s header equalized for Betis. Early in the second half, Isco’s penalty kick secured a well-deserved victory for the Andalusian team.
Despite the crucial Champions League matchup against city rivals Atletico on Tuesday, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti selected a strong lineup with no room for error in the title fight. Madrid started well and took the lead after just ten minutes through a brilliant team play involving 19 passes, which ended with Diaz scoring.
Kylian Mbappe broke through the Betis defense and played a ball to Federico Mendy in front of goal, who then squared it for Diaz to score. Betis stabilized and neither team could threaten until the home team equalized midway through the first half. Cardoso headed past Thibaut Courtois from Isco’s corner after getting away from Madrid’s defense.
Early in the second half, Antonio Rudiger collided with Jesus Rodriguez as he went in on goal, giving Betis a penalty kick. Isco, who is having a resurgence at Betis, scored his sixth goal in all competitions against his former team with a spectacular penalty kick.
Cucho Hernandez missed Courtois’ far post with a shot, while Tchouameni was fortunate to escape unpunished after clipping Ricardo Rodriguez inside Madrid’s area. In the last 15 minutes, Ancelotti substituted Brazilian youngster Endrick, who had scored in the Copa del Rey midweek, for Mbappe, who had dental issues before the match.
Madrid pushed for an equalizer, but Endrick missed the target, and Betis goalkeeper Adrian stopped a blistering effort from distance by Vinicius.
