China’s stance comes after Trump declared an increase of tariffs against their goods, from 10 percent previously imposed levies to 20 percent. The U.S. imposed these new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada as well and decided to double the levy on Chinese goods.
Reports have revealed that the US is imposing border taxes on imports as a way of safeguarding their manufacturing and to address what they call “trade imbalances.” When presenting his tariff plans at the White House, Trump said that they are taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of dealing with illegal immigration and stopping “poisonous fentanyl” and other illegal drugs from flowing into the U.S.
It has been reported that fentanyl is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of US people that are overdosing. According to Trump, chemicals originate from China, while Mexican criminals supply them illegally and operate fentanyl factories in Canada.
In response to the additional 10% tariff increase, China has decided to also add U.S. aviation, defence, and tech firms to a list of “unreliable entities” and imposed export restrictions. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jia has allegedly warned the US that if they “persist in waging a tariff war, trade war, or any kind of war,” they will fight them to the bitter end.
Wentao’s argument is that Trump’s “unilateral tax measures violate WTO,” adding that the move undermines the foundation of China-US economic and trade cooperation. He stated that China would, in accordance with WTO regulations, firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests while defending the world economic and trade order.
