(The Post News)– The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has issued a statement demanding the removal of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu from office. MK Party’s decision comes after Mchunu classified the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) report on the Phala Phala scandal as “top secret.”
The police minister was responding to a parliamentary question from the African Transformation Movement (ATM) leader Vuyo Zungula, saying that it is impermissible to make available a classified report for the purpose that the ATM requested it for. According to Mchunu, the report is not delayed, but it is not permitted to be made available.
The IPID was investigating what transpired in the chase done by VIP officers that were assigned to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who are suspected to have let loose men that had “stolen” U.S. dollars from the president’s Phala Phala farm in 2020.
The MK party accused Ramaphosa of participating in the cover-up. “At the heart of this cover-up is the abuse of police resources under direct instructions of Mr. Ramaphosa, who deployed General Wally Rhoode to orchestrate an illicit operation following the Phala Phala burglary,” the party stated. They also blame Rhoode and his team for “failing” to uphold the law, citing that they misused taxpayer-funded security structures to conduct an unlawful operation.
Furthermore, the MK Party claimed that the Government of National Unity (GNU) has taken corruption to the next level by ensuring that IPID remains under political control. “Minister Mchunu’s approval of the classification of this report is an indictment on his complicity in shielding Ramaphosa’s unlawful actions,” the party added.
MK believes that Mchunu’s decision to keep this report a secret has got nothing to do with national security, but “everything to do with shielding his political master.” The party claimed that the Minister’s decision is not only a direct attack on democracy, but also obstructs the course of justice, adding that “the people of this country deserves better. The truth will come out.”
