(The Post News)– Swiss star Belinda Bencic continues comeback with thrilling three-set victory. The former Olympic champion pulled off a major upset at Indian Wells, defeating third seed Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday to book her place in the quarterfinals.
The Swiss wildcard, who returned to the tour after giving birth to her daughter Bella last April, showed resilience throughout the two-hour, 20-minute battle. She won 69% of her first-serve points and broke the former US Open champion three times to seal the victory. In a tense third set, Bencic came back from 0-40 down to break Gauff for a crucial 5-4 lead. She then closed out the match on her first match point when the American sent a forehand long.
Gauff started strong but struggled with five double faults in the opening set. Bencic, despite requiring medical attention for foot and hand issues, dominated the second set and forced a decider. Awaiting Bencic in the next round is the winner of the match between fifth seed Madison Keys and 19th seed Donna Vekic.
