(The Post News)– Residents of Khotsong-Bothaville in the Free State have taken to the streets in protest of poor service delivery by the local government authorities. The protesters are angry that the local government has failed to address their needs and are demanding a shutdown.
Media reports have indicated that roads were blocked with stones and burning tyres. This disruption led to the closure of schools and businesses in the area. The community is calling for the removal of the Nala Municipality mayor, municipal manager, and chief financial officer. They accuse these officials of corruption and mismanagement.
Residents highlight that their basic needs are being ignored. They have not had meaningful council meetings for nine months. The leadership is blamed for not responding to community concerns, particularly regarding poor water quality. One resident stated, “Our water is filthy, and our councillors don’t take us seriously.” Many believe that the leadership have misused funds and abused their positions.
Furthermore, residents are dealing with flooding in their homes due to inadequate municipal services. Another local expressed frustration, saying the municipality is failing to deliver essential services.
Community leader Thabiso Nteso shared that they have attempted to engage with local councillors but have seen no results. For nine months, they have been seeking answers about service delivery issues and claims of rampant corruption in the municipality. Recently, local stakeholders, including councillors, acknowledged serious problems with service delivery.
The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Saki Mokoena, has visited Khotsong-Bothaville to address these community challenges. However, residents feel that tangible solutions have yet to be provided. They continue to demand accountability from their leaders and better services for their community. The situation remains tense as protests continue.
