(The Post News)– Norway’s Karoline Lund delivered a career-best performance in the opening round of the Platinum Ladies Open, carding an impressive seven-under-par 64 at the Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate on Wednesday. Her stellar round earned her a one-shot lead over Nikki Hofstede from the Netherlands and England’s Hayley Davis.
The 26-year-old, who felt confident after a strong practice round, played a bogey-free round, sinking five birdies and an eagle. The tournament has added motivation for the field this year, with the prize fund increasing by R200 000 to a total of R1.2 million.
“Some days just feel easier, and today was one of those,” Lund shared, reflecting on her round. “I hit a lot of fairways and greens, and a few putts dropped. Chipping in for eagle on the 13th was a highlight. The course is in excellent shape, even with all the rain.” Lund’s golf journey began at the age of 11, playing alongside her father during family holidays in Sweden. Since arriving in South Africa, she has been amazed by the course conditions.
“The courses here are on another level compared to Norway. We only get about six or seven months of golf back home, so it’s hard to compare,” she said. Looking ahead to the second round, Lund plans to maintain her aggressive approach and stay focused, taking each shot as it comes while enjoying the experience. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Casandra Alexander, who claimed victory at the Jabra Ladies Classic in February, and seasoned player Tandi McCallum sit two shots off the lead at five under par.
