(The Post News)- Police have arrested two suspected drug mules at OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, on Friday night.A 24-year-old Brazilian man and a 51-year-old South African woman, arrived on the same flight from São Paulo, adding to the rapidly growing number of arrests this year.
After medical examination, it was confirmed that both suspects ingested drug filled pellets, believed to be cocaine.This arrest linked to drugs trafficking comes five days after a Brazilian woman got arrested after attempting to smuggle cocaine at Cape Town International Airport. After investigations, it was revealed that the woman ingested and unknown quantity of drug pellets.
On the State Of the Nation Address, the government stated that drug trafficking syndicates, gangs and other forms of organized crime represent growing challenge in South Africa. “South African Police Services (SAPS) is making a progress in disturbing and preventing organised illegal activities.”the government said.
They reported that SAPS so far have dismantled 30 illegal laboratories, seized 323 illegal drugs and made 220 convictions. Furthermore, SAPS discovered and confiscated cocaine concealed worth over R1 million inside the suspect’s luggage, authorities are working on recovering and assessing the full amount of the drugs, and to also establish any possible links between the two individuals.
“The process of releasing these substances is ongoing, and the final quantity and value of the seized drugs will be determined upon completion” SAPS said in a statement.
