(The Post News)- The South African Air Force (SAAF) is facing a severe crisis, with only six of its 330 aircraft currently operational. This alarming situation has raised concerns about the country’s defense capabilities. The six operational aircraft include one helicopter, two fighter jets, and three fighter jet trainers.
Defence and Political analyst Kobus Marais emphasized the need to upgrade the Oryx and Rooivalk helicopters to address the “critical shortfalls” in the country’s defense capabilities. He noted that the country’s airspace is inadequately protected, and the naval forces are under-equipped.
The Standing Committee of Public Accounts (SCOPA) has also raised concerns about the South African Department of Defence and Military Veterans’ ability to defend the country. SCOPA Chairperson Songezo Zibi highlighted the drastic reduction in flying hours for pilots, which has resulted in pilots and mechanics losing their certifications and operational currency.
The situation is indeed critical, and urgent attention is needed to address the challenges facing the SAAF and the country’s defense capabilities as a whole.
