(The Post News)– Prudence Sekgodiso delivered a breathtaking performance in the women’s 800m final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Jiangsu Province, China, on Sunday. The Limpopo-born star powered through the final straight to clinch gold with a world-leading time of 1:58.40.
Sekgodiso’s path to glory has been nothing short of remarkable. Her victory in China follows a streak of dominant wins, including top finishes at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold events in Serbia and Germany. Earlier in March, she also claimed gold at the Athletics SA Grand Prix 1 in Tshwane, clocking 1:59.01.
The Olympic finalist executed a perfectly timed race strategy, keeping pace with Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew, Portugal’s Patrícia Silva, and Switzerland’s Audrey Werro over the opening 300 metres. She surged past Werro at the 400m mark before unleashing a powerful kick in the final 100m, crossing the finish line ahead of the field.
The race produced high-quality performances across the board, with all top-five finishers setting personal bests or national records. Sekgodiso’s 1:58.40 is the fastest indoor 800m time of the season, while Silva (1:59.80) and Werro (1:59.81) set new national indoor records for Portugal and Switzerland, respectively. Getachew and Poland’s Anna Wielgosz also achieved personal bests in a fiercely competitive final.
Sekgodiso’s triumph cements her status as one of the world’s top middle-distance athletes, and with the Paris Olympics on the horizon, her performance in China signals even greater things to come.
