(The Post News)- In a historic judicial decision, South Korea’s constitutional court has overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him as acting leader. This ruling comes after a tumultuous period in South Korean politics, marked by the imposition of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol in December, which led to his impeachment by the national assembly.
Since Han’s impeachment, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok had taken over as acting president. Following the court’s ruling, Han expressed a commitment to address global challenges and ensure South Korea’s continued development during these turbulent times.
However, the constitutional court has yet to announce its decision regarding President Yoon’s impeachment. If Yoon’s impeachment is upheld, the nation will have to conduct a presidential election; however, if he is reinstated, he will regain his presidential powers. Complicating matters further, Yoon has been arrested and charged with rebellion relating to the martial law decree, facing severe penalties if convicted.
The fallout from these political events has deeply divided the nation, with massive rallies erupting in support of and against Yoon across Seoul and other major cities. This polarization reflects the significant divisions within South Korean society. As the court deliberates the fate of President Yoon, the nation watches closely, grappling with the implications of these unprecedented events on its political and economic future.
