(The Post News)- South Africa claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over Benin on Tuesday, extending their lead in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, their advantage could be at risk due to an eligibility issue involving Teboho Mokoena.
Mokoena featured in South Africa’s 2-0 win over Lesotho four days earlier despite accumulating two yellow cards in previous matches, which should have triggered a suspension. A South African Football Association (SAFA) representative acknowledged the error, admitting that the technical team failed to enforce the ban.
According to FIFA regulations, protests must be filed within 24 hours, and it appears Lesotho missed the deadline. However, their football association has since reached out to FIFA and CAF for clarification.
Against Benin, South Africa dominated but struggled to break the deadlock until Lyle Foster converted a Fawaaz Basadien cross in the 53rd minute. Jayden Adams sealed the win late on with a header from an Oswin Appollis free-kick.
