(The Post News)- Defending champion Cassandra Alexander wasted no time making her mark at the Absa Ladies Invitational, kicking off the tournament with a strong five-under-par 67 at Royal Johannesburg on Thursday. She shares the top spot with Spain’s Carmen Alonso after an impressive first round.
Alexander has been in fine form on the Sunshine Ladies Tour, securing a victory at the Jabra Ladies Classic in February and claiming the No.1 position on the Investec Order of Merit. Thriving in familiar surroundings, she credited the course and atmosphere for her solid start, despite the longer playing conditions caused by recent rain.
This week’s tournament comes with an increased prize fund of R1.5 million—thanks to a R300,000 boost—marking the second consecutive event with a prize money increase. Alexander sees this as a sign that sponsors are recognising the value in women’s golf and hopes their partnerships continue to grow.
