(The Post News)– South Africa’s ambition to bring Formula One back after more than three decades is gaining momentum. The committee, appointed by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, confirmed that three bids were submitted by the 18 March deadline. The official bid to host a Grand Prix is expected to be finalised in May.
South Africa’s bid has support from seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has long called for Africa to be part of the F1 calendar. Meanwhile, industry expert Samuel Tickell emphasised the historical significance of an F1 return to the country.
While Kyalami remains a strong contender, Cape Town is also in the race with a proposed street circuit near its iconic stadium. However, South Africa may face competition from Rwanda, whose leadership is engaging directly with F1 stakeholders.
