(The Post News)– The rape of a seven-year-old girl from Bergview College, an independent school in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has generated outrage and led to protests across the country.
#JusticeForCwecwe has become popular on social media, with celebrities like Relebogile Mabotja, Sweet Guluva, Simphiwe Ngema, and many others joining in and demanding justice for the seven-year-old and her family. Mabotja wrote on her X page that pedophiles had no place in South Africa, and Cwecwe will receive justice—whether in court or on the streets.
Sweet Guluva, on the other hand, stated that Cwecwe’s terrible tragedy is an agonising reminder of the injustices communities suffer. He also stated that he supports Cwecwe and her family in their quest for justice. Meanwhile, Ngema took to her Instagram, pleading that God be with Cwecwe and all her loved ones. She further expressed heartbreak over the incident, noting she is only a stranger and could only imagine what Cwecwe’s loved ones must be going through.
Meanwhile, a petition also demanding justice for Cwecwe has received massive traction on social media. On Thursday, the petition only had 4,426 signatures, and by Monday, it had gathered 673,564 signatures. This petition has demonstrated the outrage the incident had generated countrywide.
Moreover, political parties have also joined in on the movement, campaigning for Cwecwe’s justice. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has written to the head of the portfolio committee for the South African Police Service (SAPS), requesting an update on the probe’s status during the upcoming meeting on April 2.
The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has also confirmed its support for Cwecwe, noting that its Youth League, together with its uMkhonto weSizwe Students’ Movement and Justice for SA, will partake in a national shutdown to support the #JusticeForCwecwe movement. The party called for a unified stand against criminality, encouraging its members and supporters to join them in marching against “this heinous” injustice.
The Department of Education in Eastern Cape has given Bergview College a notice of deregistration, and reports allege that the principal has refused to provide his DNA samples to the police. Furthermore, after learning of the alleged rape, the principal gave Cwecwe a transfer letter even though her parents never requested it.
