(The Post News)– The drama in the jockey world has been relentless, with tempers flaring and headlines buzzing. But for now, a few issues have been settled—well, kind of.
The jockeys who refused to ride, leading to the abandonment of a Hollywoodbets Kenilworth meeting and another cancellation, have issued a remorseful apology. Whether it prevents future tantrums remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Grant van Niekerk, who had a public meltdown on live TV over a sanction for reckless riding, has declared a self-imposed media blackout.
The long-running feud between Gavin Lerena and Jason Gates has finally reached a conclusion. Lerena received a 90-day ban (60 suspended) and a R200,000 fine (half suspended). Gates was fined R10,000 (R5,000 suspended). Both may appeal. The incident at Turffontein on 26 January saw Gates accused of striking Lerena’s whip. Lerena, in turn, abandoned his race effort to lash Gates across the back. The weekend’s photo finish at Turffontein has already sparked fresh controversy. Horse racing’s penchant for drama isn’t going anywhere.
