After an 8-year legal battle, Pastor Timothy Omotoso was found not guilty of multiple charges, sparking mixed reactions and raising questions about the handling of sexual violence cases in South Africa.
(The Post News)- Nigerian televangelist Pastor Timothy Omotoso was acquitted of all charges, including rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, and racketeering, by the Gqeberha High Court in South Africa on April 2, 2025. This marked the end of an eight-year legal battle. Judge Irma Schoeman ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, citing the state’s failure to conduct proper cross-examination and other irregularities.
The trial garnered significant public attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the involvement of a prominent religious leader. The case was further highlighted by the live broadcasting of testimonies, including that of Cheryl Zondi, who testified in 2018 that Omotoso had raped her starting at the age of 14.
Following the acquittal, there were mixed reactions. Supporters of Omotoso celebrated outside the courthouse, expressing relief and joy over the verdict. Conversely, organizations such as the ANC Women’s League expressed disappointment, emphasizing their continued support for the alleged victims and hoping for an appeal by the National Prosecuting Authority.
Omotoso’s ministry, Jesus Dominion International, has branches across South Africa, France, and the UK. The televangelist is also known for founding the 24-hour satellite TV station, Ancient of Days Broadcasting Network (ADBN), and initiating the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) aimed at mentoring young artists.
The case has sparked broader discussions about the handling of sexual violence cases in South Africa and the challenges faced by the judicial system in prosecuting such matters. As of now, it remains unclear whether the prosecution will appeal the acquittal.
Interestingly, Omotoso will be deported from South Africa following his acquittal, as he has been living in the country illegally.² The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Omotoso’s deportation will proceed in line with standard procedures for individuals without legal residency.
