(The Post News)– A teacher from Limpopo will remain in custody after a court appearance for allegedly raping a 13-year-old learner, and he is expected to be back in court on Friday.
Limpopo spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said the teacher appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape. Malabi-Dzhangi also said that more charges might be added against the teacher in terms of Section 305 of the Children’s Act. Meanwhile, according to the police, the victim was taken to her mother by another teacher.
According to Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, a preliminary inquiry suggests that the 13-year-old girl pupil was allegedly raped several times between November 2024 and March 2025. He said that the suspect was arrested following an extensive investigation by the detectives from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit.
The School Governing Body (SGB) Federation had previously pleaded with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to vigorously oppose bail and ensure that the suspect remains in custody.
Furthermore, SGB stated that granting bail in such a case would send a dangerous message and further traumatize the victim and their family. The SGB has also urged the Department of Education to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the conduct of teachers in schools across the country.
