(The Post News)– Caleb Ewan showed off his sprinting prowess on Tuesday, claiming a dominant win in stage two of the Tour of the Basque Country. The flat 160km route from Pamplona wrapped up with a lightning-fast 70 70kph sprint to the finish line in Lodosa—where Ewan surged ahead of the pack with ease.
The victory marks Ewan’s second of the season and a significant milestone since joining Ineos during the off-season. Nicknamed “the pocket rocket” for his compact 165cm frame, the 30-year-old credited his team for positioning him perfectly in the final stretch, allowing him to pounce from fourth wheel and steal the show.
Despite the flat terrain, the stage wasn’t without drama. A long breakaway was reeled in just before town, but Visma’s Victor Campenaerts crashed during the chase and appeared visibly shaken. The fall stirred uneasy memories of last year’s chaotic crash that sidelined Jonas Vingegaard for weeks.
Soudal-Quick Step’s Maximilian Schachmann retained the yellow jersey, just ahead of UAE’s Joao Almeida and Red Bull’s Florian Lipowitz. Looking ahead, Wednesday’s hilly 153km stage from Zarautz to Besain features seven climbs, including a brutal final incline hitting 16.5%, which Schachmann believes could prove decisive.
