(The Post News)- It’s official, a Soweto derby final is on the cards for the first time in nearly two decades. Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs both booked their spots in the Nedbank Cup final on Sunday, reigniting one of South African football’s fiercest rivalries.
Pirates kicked things off with a narrow 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants at the Orlando Stadium, courtesy of a well-taken first-half goal by Kabelo Dlamini. The Buccaneers now stand on the brink of history, aiming to clinch their third consecutive Nedbank Cup title ,something last achieved by the club in the 1970s under its former name, the Life Challenge Cup.
Over at Loftus Versfeld, Chiefs delivered a dramatic comeback to defeat favourites Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1. Teboho Mokoena gave the Brazilians a lead just before half-time, but Wandile Duba capitalised on a slip at the back to draw level. Ashley Du Preez then came off the bench to fire home the winner late in the second half, keeping Amakhosi’s trophy hopes alive after a 10-year drought.
The highly anticipated final will take place on Saturday, 10 May, at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
