General Michael Langley, head of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM)
(The Post News)- The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has issued a statement in support of Burkina Faso, stating the United States and its Western allies have a long history of interfering in the internal affairs of African nations under the guise of democracy, human rights, and transparency.
The EFF further accused the U.S. of attempting to “destabilise progressive African governments and regain control over the continent’s wealth.” Moreover, the EFF maintained that this accusation is a blatant attempt to undermine Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and control over its minerals due to their “imperialist greed”.
EFF praised Traoré’s bold leadership by highlighting that he has implemented significant reforms to ensure transparent management of national wealth, more especially from mining to fund public services and the majority, rather than foreign investors.
The party expressed their condemnation of the “continued Western interference” in African nations’ affairs and their attempts to control minerals of African countries.
Meanwhile, on April 3, 2025, in a United States Senate setting, General Michael Langley, Commander of the US AFRICOM, made serious allegations against Burkina Faso leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The US is accusing Traoré of using Burkina Faso’s gold reserve for his personal protection rather than the welfare of the citizens.
In response to Langley’s accusations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Burkina Faso released a statement disputing the claims, saying that these assertions are erroneous and serve no purpose other than to harm the image of their government.
According to the ministry, the concrete efforts taken on the ground indicate the Burkinabe authorities’ genuine commitment to promoting “inclusive and sustainable development”. The ministry further asserted that there are far-reaching reforms that have been undertaken in the areas of agriculture, water, infrastructure, education, and health with the objectives of better distribution of resources for the benefit of the citizens.
