Chairperson of the Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee Adv. Ezra Letsoalo reacts to the report that they have received from the Department led by MEC
(The Post News)- A fire broke out in the Accident and Emergency Department of Tembisa Hospital on Saturday, April 19, 2025. Fortunately, the swift actions of the staff ensured all patients were evacuated safely. No injuries were reported during this alarming incident.
Following the fire, the hospital is now operating under a new set of guidelines. The management has reorganized services to maintain uninterrupted patient care. Gauteng Health MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed that all hospital services remain fully operational. However, the hospital is currently on diversion for ambulances.
Visitors have experienced some changes since the incident. Access to the hospital is now limited to Gate 4, located opposite Zamokuhle Hospital. This adjustment aims to streamline entry during this challenging time. Visiting hours have not changed and remain from 14:00 to 16:00, Nkomo-Ralehoko explained.
To facilitate ongoing healthcare services, several departments have been relocated temporarily. The Surgical Outpatient Department (SOPD) has moved into the Eye Clinic, where patients can receive surgical consultations. The Medical Outpatient Department (MOPD) will now operate within the Gynaecology Outpatient Department (GOPD). Family Medicine services have shifted to Masakhane Clinic, while GOPD services are available at the Antenatal Clinic (ANC).
These changes are crucial for sustaining essential medical care while the hospital assesses the damage from the fire. Hospital management has emphasized the importance of continuing patient care during this challenging time. Constant communication with the community has been a priority. Notices are displayed on boards around the hospital and in alternative areas within the facility to keep the public informed.
The Gauteng Province Legislature Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee, led by Adv. Ezra Letsoalo, is conducting a thorough oversight at Tembisa Hospital. They are currently evaluating the affected areas and overseeing preparations to house the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department temporarily. Multiple investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, as required by law.
The hospital has urged patients to start their consultations at local clinics. This strategy aims to reduce congestion in the hospital and improve overall efficiency. Patients are advised to bring a referral letter from the clinic to facilitate their visits. This will help ease wait times and streamline administrative processes.
In light of the recent disruptions, hospital management has expressed gratitude for the community’s understanding and patience. They have reassured the public that all personnel are working diligently to restore full services as quickly as possible. For any inquiries, families can approach staff members wearing hospital name tags or security personnel stationed throughout the facility.
As the fire incident has put Tembisa Hospital’s resilience to the test, the commitment to patient care remains unwavering. While challenges lie ahead, these swift changes show the management’s dedication to ensuring everyone receives the care they need. With community support, Tembisa Hospital aims to emerge stronger than ever following this unfortunate incident. In a time of uncertainty, the hospital pledges to prioritize safety and health. The community is encouraged to cooperate and remain patient as the hospital navigates this difficult period. Together, they will overcome the challenges posed by the fire and continue to provide vital healthcare services.
