(The Post News)- According to reports, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar are considering a joint proposal to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sports, has reaffirmed the country’s intention to bid for the competition.
In an unprecedented athletic endeavor, Saudi Arabia may bid for the Rugby World Cup in addition to hosting the 2034 Football World Cup. After attending the Formula 1 Jeddah Grand Prix, the Minister was questioned about the possibility of hosting the Rugby World Cup, a sport that is rarely played in Saudi Arabia.
The Minister stated that they are interested in rugby and developing the sport locally. A federation has been created to explore ways to promote rugby in the country. “I don’t think we’re on the level of hosting yet, but 2035 is in 10 years, so maybe it grows in that direction and we see big interest in that, then why not?” he said.
When asked about a potential multi-host bid, the Minister added, “A multi-host may be a new paradigm for rugby and a successful narrative. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE – why not? The stadiums are prepared, and it would be a historic event in rugby.”
The United Arab Emirates is ranked 49th in the world’s top 50 rugby teams, making it the most competitive of the three countries. Saudi Arabia is not ranked in the top 113, while Qatar is placed 87th.
However, if their proposal succeeds, it’s possible that the country could experience significant growth in the sport over the next decade, given the potential financial backing. Sports like boxing, UFC, and Formula 1 regularly host events in Saudi Arabia, and football and cricket have gained popularity in recent years.
The Minister emphasized his goal to increase participation in various sports in Saudi Arabia. “We have 97 federations, not to host every event, but to promote sports,” he concluded.
