(The Post News)– Triple Olympic and world 1 500m champion Faith Kipyegon is set to chase the impossible: the first ever unofficial women’s sub-four-minute mile. The attempt is part of Nike’s “Breaking4” project, drawing inspiration from Eliud Kipchoge’s iconic sub-two-hour marathon feat in 2019.
Kipyegon, now 31, will take on the challenge on 26 June at Paris’ Stade Charlety — the same place she shattered her own 1 500m world record in 2023. She currently holds the official mile world record at 4:07.64 and would need to slash over seven seconds to break the four-minute barrier.
Much like Kipchoge’s run, Kipyegon will likely be supported by rotating pacers, cutting-edge gear, and other performance-boosting innovations. However, due to these aids, the time won’t count as an official record.
Reflecting on her drive, Kipyegon shared that motherhood has deepened her sense of purpose, and she wants her daughter to see what dreaming boldly looks like. For her, it is more than a race — it’s a statement. “She’s the one to do it,” said Kipchoge, and we believe him.
