Civil societies, including The Green Connection and Natural Justice, have taken on the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment in the Western Cape High Court. The case, which began on Monday, Energy Month, revolves around the department’s 2023 decision to grant environmental authorization for oil and gas exploration in Block 4/6/7.
Represented by Cullinan & Associates, the applicants argue that the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment failed to follow proper protocol when granting the rights. The Green Connection states that the minister dismissed 18 appeals lodged against the decision. The applicants believe that the authorities made a wrong decision when they granted the environmental rights to TEEPSA.
On Monday, numerous civil societies joined the applicants outside the court to show support and solidarity. The Climate Justice Coalition was among the organizations that expressed their backing, citing concerns that TotalEnergies’ fossil fuel expansion is causing destruction across Africa.
Walter Steenkamp, a fisherman from Port Nolloth and chairperson of Aukotowa Fisheries, spoke outside the court, saying, “We are here to protect our livelihoods as the fishing community. The top-down decisions they are making are not in our favor.” He added, “We have a soul connection with this ocean.”
The case continues at the Western Cape High Court, with TotalEnergies’ lawyers presenting their side, supported by expert evidence.
