(The Post News)- The 2025 papal conclave has entered its second day, and the world watches with hope and anticipation as 133 cardinal electors gather once again under the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. After a single, inconclusive ballot on Day 1—marked by the appearance of black smoke over Vatican City—the cardinals are expected to cast up to four votes today, in their continued effort to choose the 267th pope.
“The atmosphere is one of deep prayer and discernment,” shared Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni. “The Church trusts the Holy Spirit to guide the cardinals toward the right choice.” The conclave was called following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88. His papacy was defined by humility, reform, and a strong emphasis on social justice and care for the marginalized.
As the bells toll across Rome, the faithful fill St. Peter’s Square, eyes on the famous chimney. “It’s a sacred suspense,” said Sister Maria Livia, a pilgrim from Buenos Aires. “We are praying for a shepherd who can guide the Church with humility and courage.”
Among the most mentioned candidates are Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy) – Vatican Secretary of State; Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines) – Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization; and Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa (Jerusalem) – Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. “Each brings unique strengths,” noted Catholic journalist Elisabetta Piqué. “But unity, reform, and global vision are key themes among the electors.”
Today’s votes—two in the morning and two in the afternoon—may bring us closer to white smoke, the traditional signal that a new pope has been chosen. Until then, the world waits in prayerful hope.
We’ll be back with updates as the day progresses.
