(The Post News)– Mohamed Salah, an Egyptian forward, won the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Player of the Year award for the third time on Friday after leading Liverpool to a record-tying 20th English title. Salah received the honour after helping Liverpool to 28 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League this year.
The Egypt forward helped Arne Slot’s team win their first Premier League title since 2020, breaking the record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game season. Nearly 90% of the football writers’ votes went to the 32-year-old, which was the largest margin of victory. The competition saw Liverpool centre-back Viktor van Dijk finish second, Alexander Isak of Newcastle third, and Declan Rice of Arsenal in fourth place.
The only players to win the accolade three times are Salah and former Arsenal attacker Thierry Henry. Salah received the honour in 2017–18 and 2021–22. Meanwhile, to put a stop to rumors about his future, Salah signed a new two-year contract that would keep him at Anfield until 2027.
Liverpool is the front runner to win a record 21st title next season as they aim to surpass Manchester United as the most successful top-flight club in England thanks to Salah’s choice to commit to the team. The striker finished ahead of Khadija Shaw, the winner of the women’s award the previous year, making Alessia Russo the second Arsenal player to win the prize.
