(The Post News)– Xabi Alonso has officially announced his intention to depart Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the current campaign, following months of conjecture. The Spaniard is expected to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
In advance of Sunday’s game against Borussia Dortmund, Alonso informed the media that he has agreed with the club that the last two games would be his last. Meanwhile, this coming Sunday during Dortmund’s visit, which will be his last game at Leverkusen’s BayArena, he will have the opportunity to properly say goodbye to the supporters.
The 43-year-old’s remarks were followed by the formal statement from the club, confirming his departure. According to the team, Xabi’s departure occurs at the most prosperous period in the team’s history. The club also stated that Alonso is ready for growth in his managerial career after steering Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title and capturing the German Cup in an undefeated domestic season in 2023-2024, adding that Real Madrid is next on his managerial radar.
According to Spanish reports, the former player has already committed to a three-year contract, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who is expected to go before the World Cup is over to take over as manager of the Brazilian national team. After a poor season in the Spanish capital, Alonso has long been in the lead to replace the Italian. When Real Madrid plays Barcelona in what may be a title-deciding “Clasico”, they have one more chance to save their season.
