(The Post News)– A horrific accident on the N2 highway involving a tow truck and bakkie has claimed the lives of nine Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members, with others sustaining serious injuries, mostly mothers.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has conveyed his condolences to bereaved families and the church. He noted that losing a mother is a highly painful occurrence that represents a fundamental change in the family’s life and encompasses a wide spectrum of sad feelings.
Duma further stated that according to a preliminary report that he got from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), the accident occurred along the N2 Northbound after Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involving a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 which was transporting 24 members of the ZCC. He said that the RTI and emergency rescue services notified them that a tow truck collided with the Hyundai H-1’s rear end, killing people and seriously injuring others.
The survivors were taken to hospitals and are receiving treatment. According to the MEC, he has organised a team from his office to liaise with the church and families during their difficult period.
Furthermore, Duma has also instructed the RTI to immediately keep in touch with Road Traffic Management Corporation in ensuring that an investigation around this is conducted around this tragic accident. Duma said they will be updating the people of KwaZulu-Natal moving forward.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service reported on several serious traffic incidents across the South Coast region in KZN that they responded to last night.
According to Arrive Alive, the emergency personnel were on the R61 near San Lameer attending to a collision that involved two vehicles that resulted in one person being seriously injured. They also stated that the most severe accident occurred on the P200 near Margate, where a head-on collision between two vehicles left twelve people injured, adding that casualties presented with conditions ranging from minor to serious.
