South African music producer Kelvin Momo is embroiled in a bitter dispute with Australian event company Ace Events, which claims Momo’s company owes it over R2.8 million in refunds and damages. The trouble began when Momo failed to show up for his highly anticipated Australian tour last year.
According to court papers, Ace Events hired Kelvin Momo to perform at two shows in Melbourne and Perth in November 2024. The agreement stipulated that Momo would perform for 60 minutes in each city, with a 50% deposit paid upfront and the balance due seven days before the events. If Momo failed to perform, he would refund the promoter.
However, Momo and his team failed to board the flights arranged for them on three separate occasions. Despite assurances that they would perform, Momo didn’t show up for the events, forcing Ace Events to cancel the shows and refund ticket holders.
Ace Events claims that Momo’s company owes it R2.8 million in refunds and damages, including costs for accommodation, flights, and reputational damages. The company has filed papers in the Johannesburg High Court, seeking the liquidation of Kelvin Momo Production.
If Kelvin Momo couldn’t perform and did not manage to arrange a new suitable date to play, he would promptly return the promoter’s money. In return for his services, Butshiire stated that Ace Events consented to pay Kelvin Momo’s stable US$10,000 performance fees for the Melbourne event and US$7,500 for the Perth party.
He stated that they made a 50% deposit to Kelvin Momo and agreed to pay him the remaining amount seven days before the carnivals. Only time will tell how this saga unfolds. One thing is certain, however: Kelvin Momo’s Australian adventure has left a sour taste in the mouths of fans and promoters alike.
