Novak Djokovic has parted ways with coach Andy Murray after just six months. Djokovic announced the split on Tuesday, expressing gratitude to Murray for their time together. “Thank you, Coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun, and support over the last six months on and off the court. I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” Djokovic said on social media.
The partnership began with a promising win against Carlos Alcaraz, which saw Djokovic qualify for the Australian Open quarterfinals. However, their momentum was halted when Djokovic was forced to retire from the tournament due to injury during his semifinal match against Alexander Zverev. Since his recovery, Djokovic has experienced a string of losses, including defeats by Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final, Alejandro Tabilo in Monte Carlo, and Matteo Arnaldi in Madrid.
Despite their on-court differences, Murray’s departure doesn’t seem to be due to any personal issues, as Djokovic appreciated their friendship. Djokovic, still seeking his first title win of the year and his 100th tour-level title, will participate in the Geneva Open next week as a wild card.
It’s worth noting that while Djokovic has a strong record against Murray, winning 25 of 38 matches, Murray is a decorated player with three Grand Slam titles and three Olympic medals, including two golds. The breakup comes ahead of the French Open, where Djokovic will aim to bounce back and add to his 24 Grand Slam titles.
