(The Post News)– The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) again finds itself at the mercy of public backlash as it makes the decision not to move forward with the legal proceedings of Cwecwe’s rape case.
After reviewing the case docket, including a medical evaluation of Cwecwe that reportedly failed to provide enough evidence to prove sexual assault, the NPA ruled it insufficient to proceed with court proceedings.
As a result of the NPA’s ruling, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Eastern Cape re-examined the case docket and supported the decision made by the Matatiele team of prosecutions to drop the case.
Although the public accused the police of not taking Cwecwe’s case seriously until it caused outrage, the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, dismissed the allegations and declared that investigations were underway the moment the incident was reported. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola corroborated Mchunu’s statement, affirming that forensic social workers and investigating officers were on the case from its commencement.
According to Advocate Mthunzi Mhanga, the NPA national spokesperson, the DPP had doubts about releasing a statement to the public, fearing that it would ‘jeopardise’ the integrity of the case. However, due to public protests that occurred last month, Mhanga reported that the NPA ultimately settled on ‘communicating the decision’.
Meanwhile, the public has called the NPA out, along with the entire justice system, for failing Cwecwe and making her yet another rape statistic.
