A devastating storm swept through Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia, claiming over 25 lives and causing widespread destruction. In Kentucky alone, 18 people lost their lives, according to Governor Andy Beshear. Missouri reported seven fatalities, while two people died in Virginia due to falling trees.
The storms left tens of thousands without power and destroyed hundreds of homes. Jamie Burns, a resident of London, Kentucky, described the devastation, saying that areas were “totally flattened” and homes that had stood for decades were destroyed. Drone footage showed the extent of the damage, with houses reduced to splinters and trees stripped bare.
Over 108,000 people remained without power, and concerns were raised about the vulnerability of manufactured homes in the region, particularly in eastern Kentucky, one of the country’s poorest areas.
Another severe storm hit Missouri, killing five people in St. Louis and two in Scott County, with authorities describing it as one of the worst in St. Louis’ history. Mayor Cara Spencer confirmed the devastation, stating that 38 people were injured and around 5,000 buildings damaged.
A church in one St. Louis neighborhood suffered significant damage, prompting rescue efforts and prayers from the community. With more severe weather forecasted, concerns were raised about the potential impact of National Weather Service staffing cuts on disaster preparedness.
