(The Post News)– Phethisang Makhethe delivered the performance of her life over the weekend, rewriting South Africa’s women’s hammer throw record in spectacular fashion.
Though narrowly beaten by American Anthonett Nabwe, who claimed gold with a record-setting 69.85m, Makhethe’s efforts were nothing short of exceptional. She improved the national record by 71 centimetres, surpassing the previous mark of 67.95m set by Leandri Holtzhausen in Tokyo this past March.
Makhethe, a former African Youth Games silver medallist, also smashed her personal best by nearly two metres. Earlier this month, she recorded a 66.80m throw in Illinois – until now, her furthest.
Athletics South Africa President James Moloi applauded her milestone, calling it a major breakthrough and underlining the significance of her progress in what he described as one of the sport’s toughest events. He also praised her coach and support team, noting their vital role in her success.
Makhethe’s new record marks a defining moment in her rising career and positions her as a serious contender on the global stage.
