(The Post News)- On Monday, May 19, 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa began a four-day working visit to the United States, aiming to address escalating diplomatic tensions and reinforce bilateral relations. The visit, scheduled from May 19 to 22, includes a pivotal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, May 21.
The relationship between South Africa and the United States has been strained since President Trump’s return to office in January 2025. Key points of contention include the Trump administration’s decision to grant refugee status to 49 White South Africans, citing alleged racial persecution—a claim strongly denied by the South African government. President Ramaphosa criticised the asylum-seekers, labeling them “cowards” for fleeing efforts to redress apartheid-era inequalities through land reforms and racial quotas.
Additionally, President Trump has accused South Africa’s Black-led government of enacting policies that discriminate against whites and has labeled farm attacks as “genocide.” In response, he issued an executive order in February cutting all U.S. funding to South Africa. During his visit, President Ramaphosa is expected to address these issues and advocate for the removal of U.S. trade tariffs on South African exports, particularly vehicles and agricultural products.
He emphasised the importance of focusing on advancing South Africa’s national interests, stating, “We are not going to be distracted by anything. We will focus on what is important for our country”. The South African government views this visit as an opportunity to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries. The Presidency stated, “The President’s visit to the U.S. provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries”.
